Notes and Note-Pairs in Noergaard's Infinity Series
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Danish composer Per Nørg̊ard defined the “infinity series” s = (s(n))n≥0 by the rules s(0) = 0, s(2n) = −s(n) for n ≥ 1, and s(2n + 1) = s(n) + 1 for n ≥ 0; it figures prominently in many of his compositions. Here we give several new results about this sequence: first, the set of binary representations of the positions of each note forms a context-free language that is not regular; second, a complete characterization of exactly which note-pairs appear; third, that consecutive occurrences of identical phrases are widely separated. We also consider to what extent the infinity series is unique.

Students' Attitude towards Note-taking and Reading Pamphlets/handouts in Courses
Background: the inappropriate use of handouts and notes is a common academic problem among students. Students' notes are too brief and incomplete in compare with references; hence they may not cover the required content for the courses. The aim of this paper is to analyze students' attitude toward reading handouts and notes instead of references. Methods: In this analytical and descriptive stud...
متن کاملTime Series Representations for Music Information Retrieval
Time series representations are common in MIR applications such as query-by-humming, where a sung query might be represented by a series of ‘notes’ for database retrieval. While such a transcription into (pitch, duration) pairs is convenient and musically intuitive, there is no evidence that it is an optimal representation. The present work explores three time series representations for sung qu...
متن کاملDiscrimination of simultaneous and successive tones
A series of discrimination tasks involving simultaneous and successive presentation of pairs of piano notes was given to 27 Ss. The listeners exhibited less-than-perfect ability to "hear out" the component notes in simultaneous presentations. This finding, in agreement with the results of previous investigators, demonstrated the limitation of Ohm's law of acoustical analysis. It was also found ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Item Modality and Note-taking on EFL Learners’ Performance on a Listening Test
The pivotal role of listening comprehension in second/foreign language learning requires that researchers conduct studies which investigate factors that affect test takers’ performances. The present study was set out to examine whether item modality (i.e., written vs. oral items) affects listening comprehension test performance. In addition, it investigated whether allowing test takers to take ...
